Bay-Friendly Gardening Workshop Series - 2010

Bay-Freindly class schedule

The Bay-Friendly Gardening program was developed to encourage residents to make environmentally friendly gardening choices. It is not a particular style, but an approach that works with nature to reduce waste and protect the watersheds of San Francisco Bay. Santa Clara County and other members of the Bay-Friendly Coalition have joined forces to implement a sustainable approach to the design, construction and maintenance of landscapes and gardens, by coordinating a Bay Area wide Bay-Friendly brand and suite of programs originally developed by StopWaste.org in Alameda County.

Grow a beautiful garden. Build healthy soil.

You can create a sustainable, healthy and beautiful garden using Bay-Friendly practices. Find out how to build healthy soil, minimize fertilizer use, and select appropriate plants at any of these hands-on workshops. Experienced and beginning gardeners alike can learn more about Bay-Friendly Gardening techniques during any of these hands-on workshops. Attendees will receive the Bay-Friendly Gardening Guide.

Pre-registration required at least 72 hours prior to class. Adults only. One registration per person. All Workshops are free!

Gardening from the Ground Up

The foundation of a Bay-Friendly garden is healthy soil. And the best way to build healthy soil is to amend with compost and/or cover with mulch. This class digs deeper into how to:

  •  identify finished compost and appropriate mulch for uses such as pathways, around ornamental beds, in edible beds
  •  build a compost pile in a backyard bin ( hands-on activity!)
  •  sheet mulch to replace a lawn, build new planting bed (hands-on activity!)

This class always takes place outdoors, rain or shine. Dress appropriately, bring gardening gloves if you have them and wear toe-covered shoes.
